Adjusting Your Skincare Routine For Summer

7 Ways To Adjust Your Skincare Routine For Summer

By: Samantha Marchione | 06/16/2022

The summer weather seems to already be upon us- and you know what that means! Heat, sunshine, and of course, humidity. While we all love a nice summer glow, its important to remember to properly care for your skin during these warmer months.  Just like we change our wardrobes to welcome the sunshine, shedding layers and changing fabrics, a change in our skincare routine is also a must. Summer means spending more time outside, more sweat, and constantly moving between the humid hot outdoor air and the cool, recycled, AC. All things that can wreak havoc on your skin. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you ensure you’re giving your skin all the TLC it needs. We’ve compiled 7 tips to help you cope with the summer weather on your skin!

1.     Consider your cleanser routine.

First and foremost, in the summer, we tend to produce more oil and sweat in our skin. If your noticing your face is in need of a little extra love, we have some solutions! Firstly, try double cleansing. Double cleansing is a process that helps remove stubborn, pore-clogging and acne-causing impurities by cleansing first with an oil-based cleanser, and then using a water-based, gel. The oil cleanser allows your makeup and SPF to be fully broken down and cleaned off your face, while the second cleanse completely cleans the skin, getting rid of trapped oil, dirt, and bacteria as well, leading to fewer breakouts and less congestion in the skin.

2.     Water solves… everything?

Beyond drinking the recommended amount of water a day (we’re talking 10 cups minimum, people!) one of our favourite ways to cope with the summer heat is by carrying a refreshing facial mist with us throughout our day. This not only feels like an ice cold drink of water for your skin, but it helps keep your skin hydrated, when sometimes the sun can dehydrate or dry the face out. Carry a refreshing mist with you all day for immediate invigoration, and to keep your skin protected against free radical damage all day long.

3.     Lighten up your formulas!

Following the winter weather, where many of us opt for heavier, occlusive creams to lock moisture in, you may find your skin in need of something a little lighter as the weather warms up. Lightweight serums, water- and gel-based moisturizers will be more comfortable on the face during these months. The goal is to ensure our skin is still getting all of the benefits and hydration it needs without getting bogged down by products with a thicker consistency.

4.     Antioxidants, antioxidants, and more antioxidants!

While free radical damage is always a threat, all year-round, protecting your skin from external aggressors is most important during summer as we tend to be most exposed to pollution, smoke, and other harsh external elements at this time of year. Incroporating antioxidants into your routine is critical for the summer – our faves are CBD, Argan Oil, Green Tea, Jojoba Oil, and Hemp Seed Oil (all found in our award-winning moisturizer, of course).

5.     SPF is your BFF – always, but especially NOW!

Though we definitely encourage wearing SPF all year round, this time of year the sun is incredibly strong, and we’re spending a lot more time, outdoors, exposed to it. Though we love to soak up that vitamin D, it’s important we protect ourselves against the harmful UVA and UVB rays that come with it. SPF Sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin from burns, sun damage, aging, hyper-pigmentation, and skin cancer. Opt for an SPF of at least 30 and look for “Broad Spectrum” on the package. This means it protects from both the UVA and UVB rays the sun gives off – giving you ultimate coverage.

6.     BTW… your SPF is not one and done!

Yes, we’re still on SPF here, it’s important and we need to emphasize it! Your SPF application is NOT a one and done process. If you’re exposed to the sun, you should be reapplying your SPF throughout the day to guarantee all-day day protection against harmful rays. There are tons of great options available to make re-application seamless (like powder or spray SPF’s), and not disrupt your complexion if you’re wearing makeup.

7.     Still got burnt? We got you!

Spent a little bit too much time in the sun and you’re paying the price for it? Don’t worry, the most important thing now is beginning to repair the damage that was done on your skin. Your skin may feel extra sensitive to touch, red, or severely dry. Focus on ingredients that will help heal the skin – thinks like CBD, aloe, chamomile, and panthenol. Stop using your harsh acids or exfoliants, as that will only irritate the skin more – the goal is comfort and recovery. Remember – your skincare routine is just like many things in life, as you grow and evolve, it grows and evolves with you. It’s important to always pay attention to what your skin needs and ensure your getting it the right produts. This includes making slight adjustments when the weather changes so you and your skin can get the most out of the summer sunshine.
